Situated between two splendid counties as Yorkshire and Durham, Homelands Guest House of Barnard Castle is in a strategic position for where it is easy and quick to reach the main and interesting historical centres of these two areas, by car, train and bus.

Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle, historic and full of character Market Town, takes its name from the Castle built there in the 12th century. Many notable people have visited the town over the centuries, including Sir Walter Scott and Charles Dickens, where both found literary inspiration.

Barnard Castle has lots of interesting places to shop, from clothing boutiques and food stockists, to several antiques shops. A short walk from the town center is the Bowes Museum, a very grand structure replicating a french chateau, once residence of Mrs Josephine and Mr John Bowes, with one of the country finest art collections. The Barnard Castle itself, is spectacularly set on a high rock above the river Tees, on the fringe of the town.

Durham

Named one of the Britain's eight most beautiful cities and once you walk through the city it is clear to see why; dripping with history and beauty it is a fantastic place for students too for its well-known University. There are many interesting places to visit in Durham. This is a vibrant city that has a solid connection to the past, historical sites all around, the Castle, which is part of Durham University, overlooking the river and its lovely bridges, full of life, voices and plenty of places to eat or drink.

Durham Cathedral has been a place of worship, welcome and hospitality for almost a millennium. At the heart of the Durham UNESCO world Heritage Site, the Cathedral is cherished for its magnificent Romanesque architecture. It has the most intact surviving set of medieval monastic buildings in the UK. Durham Cathedral is also marking more than 20years anniversary of its starring role in Harry Potter Movies.

Interesting Spots

Barnard Castle is close to the Pennine Way, steeped in History, this national trail winds along the mountain top along the rugged backbone of England and offers 270 miles of the finest scenery of the best upland walks in England, through the stunning Peak District landscape up to Scotland. About 15 miles from the town centre is High Force, the largest waterfall in England. Only 6 miles away is Raby Castle, a wonderfully kept historic residence, with its large deer park and gardens. There are several reservoirs in the area, the furthest away is Cowgreen, at about 12 miles.

Eden valley is only 25mins drive away in Cumbria (Lake District). Way marked walks are in adundance all over the area with several quaint old-fashioned public houses, offering good quality food conveniently situated after a thirsty stroll. Shopping and history can be found in York and Harrogate (1hour by car). Barnard Castle is conveniently located in such a central position that Scotland can be easily reached within 2 hours by direct train from Darlington to Edinburgh.
